10th September 2008, Dubai – United Arab Emirates

The Earthquake which hit Southern Iran today at 11:00:34.8 UTC with a Magnitude of 6.3 (according to Global Seismic Monitor) was felt by citizens of the United Arab Emirates in Dubai and Sharjah at around 3.30pm local time (11:30 UTC).

“I felt the tremor and run to the street” said a Moroccan Lady who lives in Sharjah, Al-Khan Area. Her watchman was reporting that he felt the first tremor at 11am local time.

“I was sitting at work in the Sharjah Airport Free Zone and felt my chair moving. When I looked around I saw the doors swinging slightly, although we are located at the ground floor” said a Manager of a Free Zone Company.

In Dubai CNN Office Staff reported that they saw up to approximately 200 people taken refuge in the streets, fearing that the new developed towers could collapse. Buildings in Dubai Media City were evacuated.

Big crowds were standing outside their buildings watching what would happen. Irritated! There was no official warning for the residence of Dubai or the Northern Emirates.

Sheikh Zayed Road with its over 50 floor buildings was witnessing the swaying of buildings. Many people felt dizzy even in Abu Dhabi.

I felt the tremor in Sharjah and saw the crowds in the street of Abu-Shagarah. I remember that we had a similar Earthquake last year in March. It was said that the Government would erect a warning system, but I couldn’t see it this year.

OH that was terrible! i really was scared!

My partner and I were on the 24th floor of a highrise tower on Shk Zayed Rd in Dubai and we felt the move strongly. Noticed the earthquake immediately as the chairs we were sitting on moved and light fitting in the ceiling started swinging. Friend in the next room mistyped as her keyboard moved. Also felt very dizzy, out of balance and felt the shock, we were shaking. Our first earthquake experience, really was a shock. When we were able to, we evacuated immediately but had no idea where to go people were crowded in the entrance of the building, just outside, nearby and on the side of the road. There was no where to go, no assembly point and absolutely no plans on what to do in case of any emergencies as such…It makes as all now wonder what could happen if it was any stronger or hit Dubai itself rather than a nearby country. We are scared of any further shakes especially with all these towers.

Earthquake felt in Jebel Ali Dubai….My desk was shaking for around 15 seconds and i dismiss it considering the machine working in the adjoining room….Thankfully nothing serious happened…..

I live iin Al Qusais area , and I felt the tremor at 1100 aprox. I live in a 12 floor and my room door were swinging slightly and the ceiling lights as well, was scary

  6. We have developed an early earthquake warning and security device for private homes, schools, hospitals, small village warning, apartments, hotels, skyscrapers and industry market. This system can warn the people in the endangered regions on time before an earthquake comes and shut off all systems. The function ability was tested positively in extensive tests at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (

Our device give alarm by p-wave of an strong earthquake/ dependent of the intenistiy on the location where system is installed.

There was an earthquake in Guatemala with a Magnitude of 6.1 on 14th of April 2008.
Our installed system in the German School in El Salvador is around 140km away from the EPI centre. The warning time was around 20-30 seconds before the S-wave reaches the building.

We have projects in 10 countries. In Chile, Greece (City Hall), in Turkey (Consulate of Czech Republic in Istanbul), Hilton Hotel Istanbul), in Indonesia (Banda Ache), in Iran, in Afghanistan (Office of German Agro Action), in Pakistan (Hospital Kashmir), in Peru (private houses), in San Salvador (2 German schools), in USA and also in Germany (QVC-building).

Our system is an indispensable component of the modern building management in all vulnerable to seismic shock countries today. We can also connect our system in your building management system.

Also we have an order from the German Government for 4 projects in Pakistan.

The product has won the idea price “W.I.N. AWARD 2006” as the best product innovation 2006 in Germany.

    Our technic:
Our sensors record the harmless P wave. About electronics the wave is analyzed and evaluated in fraction of a second. If the swelling value (the intensity at the building) should be higher than the value demanded by the scientists, the system will give alarm. Different switching processes can be started over an energy management. In this way, for instance, it is possible to

    give alarm before

shut off gas and electricity supplies

    shut off the water supply

    activate emergency power generators

    park elevators

    open safety doors and gates

traffic lights in front of bridges and tunnels

    control railway signal installations

    run data back-up programs

Overall, the energy management system is able to control up to a maximum of 8 different electronically operated energy systems and building installations.

The sensor can over a display with 8 differently swelling values (depend for the intensity of an earthquake where at the local place the system is installed) be adjusted according to the structure of the building.

For an additional safety the system can be executed redundantly against false alarms. It is dependent how many people I will warn (single house = 1 detector and for example a 30 apartments building = 2 – 3 detectors). The sensors can be connected to a network with each other in a “Master/ Slave” up to 16 detectors relation.

The basic module consist of the earthquake device and two sirens (as a single item 1,980$US).

I was working on my computer and suddenly felt dizzy and then I heard people running outside and turned around, to see all the furniture rattling. Someone was screaming ‘earthquake!’ so I just gathered up my belongings and ran down through the stairs (I’m on the 10th floor). I saw many people getting into the elevators and remember vaguely wondering ‘what if that gets stuck?’

People were just gathered outside, calling up family and friends to find out details. I’m just wondering what if it was an earthquake of catastrophic levels? As far as I know, there are no evacuation or emergency plans in place for such circumstances. What if?
